This is a nickname give to New Zealanders by New Zealanders. It is not a negative name. It comes from the kiwi (bird), not the fruit. NB Kiwis (NZers) will always call the fruit "kiwi-fruit", not "kiwi". The "kiwi" is the bird, and a "Kiwi" is a person from NZ.
