The first is bicycle helmets with cable ties sticking out of them.
As a wandered down the bike paths and footpaths, I saw a strange sight of cyclists wearing these odd contraptions. At first I thought it might be some kind of Brisbane cyclist fashion fad, but later I learnt that the cable ties are deterrents to stop magpies from swooping and attacking cyclists as they pass by the magpie nests.
Magpies are very territorial birds and they do not like it when anyone approaches their nests. In some areas the magpies become extremely aggressive and attack cyclists as they ride near the nests.
I don't know how well the cycle helmets with cable ties work, but they must help because people still wear them.
